Research Pertaining to Medical Astrology

Seasonal influences (position of the sun in the sky) relationship with health conditions. [Hippocrates described a connection between seasonality and disease nearly 2500 years ago, “for knowing the changes of the seasons. . . how each of them takes place, he [the clinician] will be able to know beforehand what sort of a year is going to ensue . . . for with the seasons the digestive organs of men undergo a change.” Following in footsteps laid more than 2 millennia ago, recent studies have linked birth month with neurological, reproductive, endocrine and immune/inflammatory disorders, and overall lifespan.] Birth month affects lifetime disease risk: a phenome-wide methodconsult

A Summary of Research Papers and Videos by David Cochrane
as of November 2017:

The summary below is divided into 4 sections: (A) Papers on research studies, (B) Videos on research studies, (C) Papers on theory, and (D) VIdeos on theory

(A) Papers on research studies
(and one unpublished study that was presented at an astrology conference)
1. AstroSignatures in the Gauquelin Data Revealed, David Cochrane, 2007.
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/discovery.html
Exploratory research of the Gauquelin data indicates that harmonic aspects in the data that are expected according to the theories in Vibrational Astrology are confirmed. This is exploratory research designed to build a clear model that can be later tested more rigorously. Results of the study are very encouraging.

2. Towards a Proof of Astrology: An AstroSignature for Mathematical Ability, David Cochrane, 2004.
A pilot study and exploratory research into possibile indicators of mathematical ability. Particular 7th harmonic aspects were found in great mathematicians. This paper reports results form one of the early research studies (done in year 2004) and results have not been replicated so the results may be spurious.
3. A Reassessment of the Mars Effect and Other Planetary Effects, David Cochrane and Dr. David Fink, 2010.
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/mars_effect.html
A reanalysis of the results of the Gauquelin research shows that the Gauquelin plus zones are smaller than what was proposed by the Gauquelins. A comparison of zodiac longitude, right ascension, and Placidian arcs shows that there are slight differences between the results depending on these measurement systems.
4. A Reanalysis of Theodor Landscheidt’s Findings Regarding Mars-Saturns Angles in Birth Charts of Scientists, David Cochrane, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/reanalysis_of.html
Intriguing results are obtained by analyzing Landscheidt’s golden mean aspects in the Gauquelin data. The findings are not definitive but do provide interesting possibilities for further exploration.
5. Distribution of Mars in Gauquelin Secotrs for Day Charts and Night Charts of Professional Groups, David Cochrane, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/gauquelin_paper5.html
Analyzing the Gauquelin data for differences based on whether the chart is a day chart or night chart produces some interesting results but none of the results strongly suggest that predictors of vocation are possible with the variables investigated in this study.

6. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn Effects on Extraversion/Introversion, David Cochrane and Dr. David Fink, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/gauquelin_paper2.html
The Eysenck Personality Inventory was administered to 982 college students. An analysis of the results suggest that Mars and Jupiter in Gauquelin plus zones may have a very slight inclination to extraversion and Saturn in these plus zones incline to introversion but the effect sizes, if they exist, are very small.
7. Astrological Harmonic Patterns as Possible Indicators of Extraversion/Introversion, David Cochrane and Dr. David Fink, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/gauquelin_paper3.html
The Eysenck Personality Inventory was administered to 982 college students. An analysis of the results suggest that Sun and Saturn in 7th harmonic aspect inclines to introversion. This is consistent with ideas in Vibrational Astrology.

8. Renalaysis of the Gold Price Forecast, David COchrane, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/gold_price_forecast.html
A reanalysis of the results of a study in predicting gold prices using more careful statistical tools confirms the findings. One of the main predictors of higher gold prices is Sun and Jupiter in 7th harmonic aspect. This is a finding based on training data and was not confimed with test data, but a later study with test data suggests that the effect may be real.

9. The First 32 Harmonics: A Qualitiative Study, David Cochrane, 2012
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/pdf/harmonicfirst32.pdf
This very large study analyzes the charts of people in a database who have the most aspects in the first 32 harmonics. This is a qualitative study but inferences are much stronger than from the usual cherry-picked data that astrologers typically use. Consistent themes for these charts are found and the findings are generally consistent with expectations but modifications to current theory are also made based on the findings.

10. Baseball Batting Performance, Unpublished, David Cochrane, Linda Berry, Starlene Breieter, Will Morris, Steven Wade. Corrlelation values of baseball batting performance with transiting aspects are being analyzed. The research design and current model were presented at the Kepler Conference in January, 2017 (www.TheKeplerConference.com). More results of this ongoing research project with be presented at the Kepler Conference in January, 2018.

(B) Videos on research studies:

1. Possible Astrological Indicators of Mental Illness, David Cochrane, 2013

This presentation is more about how to conduct research using particular software than about making a strong case that astrological indicators of mental illneess may have been identified, but the results are interesting.
2. Did Gauquelin Prove Astrology? Part 1, David Cochrane, 2013

A reanalysis of the Gauquelin findings shows that the results that Gaquelin obtained are not as impressive as was suggested by Gauquelin.

3. Did Gauquelin Prove Astrology? Part 2, David Cochrane, 2014

An exploratory study of the Gauquelin data that combines the Gauquelin plus zones with harmonic aspects provides very impressive results that are consistent with ideas in Vibrational Astrology.

4. Evidence that there is a Science fo strology, David Cochrane, 2015

A very short video of only 3 1/2 minutes that summarizes the hypothesis test conducted by LInda Berry on gold prices, and the results which obtained mildly positive results. Insufficient data makes it difficult to draw strong conclusions, but the results are positive.

5. Predicting Accidents with Vibrational Astrology, David Cochrane, 2016

How a model for predicting accidents is built and is tested. The model that is built provides results that are consistent with the data collected. This video demonstrates the early stages of building a model that can later be tested more rigorously.

6. Chiron: Wounded Healer, Quiet Charisma, Focused Self-Expression or an Electric Current, David Cochrane, 2014
Using Intensity Sampling an astrological significance for Chiron is proposed that is consistent with the data. The model that is built is far more impressive than the models usually proposed by astrologyers using cherry picked data. This video shows how a model can be built which has hope of being confirmed in hypothesis tests.
7. Ceres in Astrology, Part 1, David Cochrane, 2016

Using Intensity Sampling an astrological significance for Chiron is proposed that is consistent with the data. The model that is built is far more impressive than the models usually proposed by astrologyers using cherry picked data. This video shows how a model can be built which has hope of being confirmed in hypothesis tests.
8. Ceres in Astrology, Part 2, David Cochrane, 2016

Using Intensity Sampling an astrological signficance of each zodiac sign is proposed that is consistent with the data. The mdoel that is built is far more impressive than the models usually proposed by astrologers using cherry picked data. This video shows how a model can be built which has hope of being confirmed in hypothesis tests. The 12 links are the links to the videos of each of the 12 zodiac signs.

(C) Papers on a theoretical framework for astrology, the nature of astrology, and research methods:
1. Astrology, Science, and Causality, David Cochrane, 2005. http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/astrology.html
Contrary to a widespread popular opinion, much of modern science is not based on causal mechanisms and is not mechanistic in the way that it is perceived to be. Astrology is more compatible with the scientific paradigm than it might seem.
2. The Scientific and Epistemological Paradigm Shift of the Early 1900’s, David Cochrane, 2007.
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/paradigm_shift.html
How the epistemological shift from an extreme positivist empirical approach to abstract mathematical models is more consistent with astrological theoretical frameworks.
3. The Mathematical Basis of Arabic Parts and a Paradigm Shift in Astrology
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/arabic_parts.html
Some ancient astrological ideas, such as arabic parts, are consistent with wave theory. That ancient ideas are consistent with modern scientific concepts indiates that modern scientific ideas have more useful applications in astrology than is generally recognized by astrologers.

4. An Introduction to Astrological Research Methods, David Cochrane, 2010
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/astrological_research_methods.html
Introduction to terms like anecdotal evidence, qualitiative research, and quantitative research.

5. Extreme Case Sampling on Predictor Varabiles: A Powerful Qualitative Research Method, David Cochrane, 2011
http://astrosoftware.com/cpnew/a_and_v/pdf/ExtremeCaseSamplingAcadPaper.pdf
The usefulness of extreme case sampling. This removes cherry picking of data and provides a way for astrologers to use their content expertise without being restricted and to draw greater inferences than is possible from anecdotal evidence.
